This packet will help students learn how Bearden used personal memories of African-American cultural history and literature as the source of his subject matter.
Also included is Bearden’s style and influences by numerous sources, including Western European art, African sculpture, the art of his contemporaries in America and Mexico, and music, especially blues and jazz.

It is based on the collage by Romare Bearden called Return of the Prodigal Son. The work can be discussed on two different levels: one relating to the ancient parable about the prodigal son, and the other based on Bearden's life and contemporary society.

Music & Art Practice
Students will learn to look for cut and pasted papers and images, paint, ink and pencil designs, shapes and spaces and the rhythms therein. They will learn to listen to music by looking at Bearden’s work and learn to see Bearden’s work by listening to jazz.
Collage Art Practice
The lesson includes discussing some of the themes and items in Bearden's collages. Explain that he used a variety of materials in his collages, including items cut from magazines and newspapers.

This activity explores the Public art of Romare Bearden located in New York City at Westchester Square Elevated Subway
