The Family (Romare Bearden, 1975)

Four stylized Black figures gather in a colorful domestic interior. A seated adult in a gray headwrap and dark apron is centered behind a table; a child stands at left, another adult at right, and a fourth figure is partly visible through a doorway. In The Family, four figures occupy a densely layered domestic interior. A seated figure anchors the composition behind a table, while a child leans in from the left, another adult stands at the right, and a fourth person is partly visible through a doorway. Bearden combines flattened forms, photographic imagery, richly patterned surfaces, and saturated yellows, blues, greens, reds, and browns to give the everyday family scene a powerful sense of intimacy, movement, and visual rhythm.
