In celebration of Earth Day, April 22nd, we feature a conversation on storytelling as a form of liberation, rooted in Black history, nature, and community memory with artist and author Caroline Brewer.
Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
Ms. Brewer will talk about her latest project, Harriet Tubman, Force of Nature, A biography in poems. This book beautifully weaves poetry, collage, and children’s voices to interpret Black history, social justice, and the natural world in ways that feel both urgent and deeply resonant.
When Caroline Brewer writes, she commits to making worlds where peace and harmony reign and everybody’s dancing on a soul-to-soul train. When Caroline Brewer writes, she bakes bread for the hungry, pours water for the thirsty, heaps hope for the hopeless, packaged with a bit of dope-ness. When Caroline Brewer writes, she fashions stories for the young and young at heart, for those looking to get a fresh start, make everything in life a work of beautiful art, and acknowledge that nature rocks and don’t stop!
While working at the Audubon Naturalist Society, Brewer created the Taking Nature Black conference in 2016. The conference was a space for Black environmental professionals to tell their stories and serves as a community of support. Caroline says this about her work:
“[This work] become[s] a model. Taking Nature Black and Naturally Latinos are models of connection and for how we can understand each other better. Embrace and celebrate our differences. The planet and this region need all of us. We are all up against so many challenges and threats. The connections that we make and the stories that we tell and the work that we do hand-in-hand make a difference.” [Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay]

The Cinque Artist Program is named after the Cinque Gallery, founded by artists Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis, and Ernest Crichlow in the late 60s. The gallery served as a catalyst for artists and curators of color to exhibit, but also as a place for networking and building community. Our series promotes presentations by professionals and provides practical information, as well as a platform for artists to showcase their work. We encourage adult artists, students, and enthusiasts to share in discussions in an intimate setting.
The Cinque Artists Program is supported, in part, with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council.
The Bearden Foundation’s programs and activities are made possible, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
The Mellon Foundation, the Mertz Gilmore Foundation, and other foundations, corporations, and individual donors generously provide additional support.
The Romare Bearden Foundation is a participant of the Harlem Cultural Collaborative of Harlem One Stop
